Story Springboards

We use stories and author studies as a springboard to all areas of learning. See FAQs.

Woven through the curriculum are the cross curricular threads; diversity and anti bias, fairness and respect, compassion and kindness for self and others, and care for the environment.

Curriculum

Year long Learning Journeys: Based on seasons, weather, interests...

Introduced at the appropriate time, these become ongoing inquiries that are revisited throughout the year at Sandpipers. They are built upon as interest and enthusiasm builds inquiry, connections become apparent and cognitive development progresses. All the domains of Literacy, Math, Science, Social sciences, Music, as well as social, emotional and physical skill building are approached through these ongoing inquiries.

  • Investigations that  crop up through wild walks, and outdoor play: gardening, bird study, minibeasts, plants and trees, pond life, ocean life. evaporation, freezing/melting etc.

  • Animals local, woodland and farm, tracks and trails, habitats.

  • Science that we can see: Light and Shadows, dry and wet, floating sinking, push and pull forces, inclined planes, trash and pollution, etc.

  • Our bodies. How they grow, how they work, what fuels them, hygiene, nutrition, self help abilities.

  • Our celebrations that highlight food, family and friends.

  • Seasonal and weather changes and how it affects the flora, fauna and us.

  • Explore the people and places around us.

Children's own interests.....

Most of our work is anchored by the natural world around us, but i also want to incorporate a child's own enthusiasms and give opportunities for them to share their interests. This ensures their own interests are valued and incorporated into our learning journeys. It might be dolls, dogs, dump trucks or dinosaurs, I will find a way to honor their passions! I want to allow children a chance to feel important, to feel listened to and to feel like an expert.
